What-To-Do Wednesday: Natural Makeup Routine

What are the steps for natural everyday makeup?

I am always looking through YouTube videos to find easy and simple ways to do natural makeup for everyday. Here are few that I really like and thought I share with you. Enjoy!!

These are the two I follow when I go to a daytime event like showers or birthday parties, both with Urban Decay’s Naked pallet. If you don’t have the pallets, you can use any combo of gold/bronze/dark brown shadow you have.

Saturday Splurge vs. Steal

My body has dry skin so I always have to put on moisturizer, no matter how hot and humid the temperature, and must scrub my body at least once a week.  Over the years I have used many different brands and below is my recommendation and opinion.

Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish

My Opinon:

  • Love the fragrance
  • Sugar beads are soft on skin
  • Sugar beads does melt if you continue to scrub
  • Leaves skin soft but a little greasy
  • I don’t like the oily residue
  • Best of use in the winter season; you can even skip lotion if you want
  • Comes in a big tub so lasts a while
  • Different versions of this polish is not available but you can easily make it at home (see below)
  • Price is ridiculous: $65 for one tub

Final thought:

The price is too much for just a scrub, anyone can make an at home version for themselves for much cheaper

The Body Shop’s Olive Body Scrub

My Opinion:

  • Fragrance is light but i don’t really like it
  • Crushed walnut shells and olive stones are soft on skin
  • Crushed shells & stones does not melt but is not harsh on skin
  • Leaves skin soft and not greasy
  • Leaves no oily residue but skin does not feel dry
  • Best for use all year long but will need to use oil/lotion in winter after scrubbing
  • Comes in a medium tube but lasts a while
  • Price is good: $19 & they always have coupons or buy one get one sale

Final thought:

It’s a great scrub for the price; it keeps skin flake free and healthy looking and can be used any season.

If you want to do your own version of the sugar scrub, then follow the instructions below. Inexpensive but effective and it makes a great gift.

Brown Sugar Body Scrub

  • 1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil, can substitute Sweetened Almond Oil or Vegetable Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Vitamin E (cut open Vitamin E liquid gel caps)
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract , optional (or your favorite citrus essential oil)
  • 1 tablespoon honey, optional for dry skin

In a medium mixing bowl, combine oil, vitamin E and vanilla. Add the brown sugar and mix well and you have yourself a great, at home scrub.

Friday Fab Finds

Hair Straightener

Sometimes a girl just wants to wear her hair straight, you know, keep it simple!  Well if you have hair like mine, frizzy, unruly, curly and long, then you might spend TWO hours, like me, to get your hair straight.  I have to first blow dry my hair, which takes an hour if I actually want it somewhat straight, and then I have to use a straightener to finally get it pin straight and smooth out my hair, which takes another hour.  Summer days are the most difficult for me to get and keep my hair straight; with the humidity and sweat for being under the hot air of the blow dryer, my hair goes back to being curly almost as soon as I get it straight…ugh!!!  So, after years of fighting with myself about getting the wet to dry straighteners because I thought they damage hair more, I finally gave in.  I realized that the damage is kind of the same as using blow dryer + flat iron but I spend half the time, only an hour to get straight hair, yay!!  Now, I am not saying you use this method of straightening your hair everyday because it is harmful, but when you do want straight hair, it’s a great time saver.  I usually straighten my hair and don’t wash it for at least two days.  No, it’s not gross, washing hair too often strips hair of natural oil and you can always use dry shampoo to keep your locks fresh.

I use Remington Wet to Straight 1” Straightener; its slim, heats up fast, automatically shuts down if not in use for 15 minutes, have different heat settings so you can get your perfect temperature and it dries and flattens my hair fast.  It’s a FAB FIND because you are only spending about $25 for one item rather than buy a hair dryer for $25 to $30 AND a flat iron for $25 (total $50+!!) and it’s an amazing time saver for busy girls everywhere.  Below are some retailers where you can get one for yourself or your favorite girl.  Happy shopping and TGIF!!

What-to-do Wednesday: Hair Braids

What braids should you try this week?

Last week I posted some videos of simple hair buns for summer.  This week I am staying with the hair theme and posting some YouTube videos of hair braids.  My hair is somewhat long and I don’t really like to leave it down often because it tangles easily.  In the summer time, I almost always have my hair either on a bun or braided.  So, I thought you guys might like to try some of these out.  These tutorials are easy, breezy and so much fun!!  I posted seven different ones for you guys to try; one for every day of the week all from Luxy’s channel because I find their tutorials easy to follow and you don’t need a ton of stuff to recreate the looks.  Enjoy and let me know which one of these is your favorite!

  1.  Fishtail braid – my absolute favorite, I do this all the time

  2. Knotted braid

  3. Criss Cross braid

  4. Four Strand braid – keep repeating up & down and you won’t forget the steps

  5. Five Strand braid

  6. Regular braid w/a micro braid (video look # 1)

  7. Rope braid

Saturday Steal vs. Splurge

This week’s splurge vs. steal is about the very alluring and forever sexy red lips and its bff the red lipstick!  It’s the one lip color that will always be trendy, universally flattering, since there are various shades of red, and appealing to both men and women.  It’s also the best five minute makeup routine for those busy mornings; all you need is tinted moisturizer, some concealer, curled lashes and red lips and you are done!!  Below are the two that I recommend and also added tips on how to apply it and how to find the right red lipstick for your skin tone.

Sonia Kashuk’s Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Rosey Nude

My Opinion
  • $7.59 at any Target stores or
  • Creamy texture
  • Easy glide on application
  • Won’t feel dry on the lips
  • Rich pigmented color
  • Extra long wear
  • Contains fig aroma
  • Comes in five other shades
  • Price is amazing
  • it is creamy & easy to apply; no need to buy matching lip liner, can use the crayon to line the lips and then fill in with color
  • the texture is matte but it doesn’t dry my lips
  • color is very pigmented but with light strokes, it will appear light and looks great with lip gloss (if you want a glossy red lip); I would say its orangey red
  • the crayon is a good size so even with daily use, it will last a while
  • color didn’t last long, I had to reapply a couple of times at work
  • the “aroma” is awful, I don’t like the smell at all, its actually smells like chemicals

Final thought:

Even if the smell is not good and I had to reapply, it has other good qualities.  It’s a great red lipstick for my collection and an amazing product for the price.

M.A.C Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo

My Opinion
  • $15 at any M.A.C stores of department stores that carries the brand
  • Velvety texture
  • Vivid blue-red color
  • Matte
  • It comes in a lot of different shades and textures (glossy, matte, satin, etc.)
  • price is a little high for the a tube of lipstick, especially since I use it with a $15 lip liner, so spent $30 total
  • color is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I think this lipstick will look good on any skin tone and it’s a true blue-red
  • very, very matte, so it’s hard to apply on dry lips, must use lip primer or on moisturized lips and make sure lips are scrubbed so the color will appear smooth
  • it does dry out my lip a bit
  • it’s hard to use as a liner, even with lip brush the line is not that pronounced; I use it with M.A.C’s Cherry lip liner
  • color lasts long, I only had to reapply after I ate food
  • as I have said before, it’s a very matte lipstick which means it doesn’t transfer on clothes, other people (when you kiss, so it’s husband/boyfriend proof, lol) or teeth, yay!
  • I never tried it with a gloss, but I am sure it will look just as divine glossy as it does matte
  • a tube of this will last long since reapplication is not need that much
  • it does have a light smell, but I don’t hate and it doesn’t bother me

Final thought:

Even though I spent $30 just for this lipstick and liner and it does dry out my lips a little, it’s the best, bright colored red lipstick I found so far that actually looks great on my skin.  I love it and if you have the money for it, then definitely get yourself a tube.

Below is where you can get Sonia Kashuk and M.A.C.  Also I added a great video on how to apply red lipstick and link to a post on how to find your perfect red lips.

Let me know what you guys think about these two.  If you have a great one that you use, please let me know.
