With the changing season, our skin care routine changes and so does our makeup routine.  I usually go for darker, bolder lips and purple/plum or smokey brown eyes during fall/winter.  Here are few YouTube videos I am trying to imitate and thought I share.  Enjoy!

What-To-Do Wednesday: How to combat oily skin

I recently got a message asking for info on how to get rid of oily skin.  I think if you are born with oily skin, you can never escape it but you can definitely tone down the shine.  Below are few helpful tips on what you can do to combat oily face.

  1. Wash face with the right cleanser even if you don’t breakout, use a clearance with 2% salicylic acid which helps fight zits and also keeps skin matte.  I like DDF’s blemish control cleanser but drugstore brand Clean & Clear also has great ones like the 3-in-1 Exfoliating Cleanser, Continuous Control Acne Cleanser and new one just for oily skin, Advantage Oil Absorbing Cream Cleanser.
  2. Now that you have picked the right cleanser, make sure to use the right tool to wash your face.  Use a face brush like Clarisonic or the Olay brush to wash your face.  Not only do they get rid of all the dirt, they also help exfoliate.
  3. Use an alcohol based astringent to oily areas only; it will help eliminate the extra oils throughout the day.
  4. A fast and cheap home mask is egg yolk.  Dip a cotton ball in egg yolk and apply to oily areas, leave it on for 15 minutes and wash it off with cold water.
  5.  Use a face mask at least once a week that has clay or salicylic acid; both of these temporarily reduce oil production in your skin. I like Boots Botanics Conditioning Clay Mask.
  6. Be mindful of what you put on your face before you go to bed.  If you are using a cream and it’s making your skin oily, then switch to a lotion if it’s still oily, then use hydrating serum.  But make sure that your moisturizer has salicylic acid to reduce oil production or caffeine which minimizes pores for a matte face.
  7. If you wear foundation everyday, make sure to buy a water based formula and always opt for oil free options.  I myself wear tinted moisturizer or BB cream everyday and only wear foundation for special occasions.
  8. Keep blotting papers with you at all times, Clean & Clear has great one at an affordable price.  Blot away the excess oil instead of powdering the face; it will keep your face looking matte and fresh instead of cakey.
  9. Stop touching your face too much, oils from your hand will transfer on to your face and make the matter even worse.  Oily hair and oily skin goes together so if you are seeing too much shine on your face, keep your hair pulled back.
  10. Lastly, watch what you eat and drink.  Increase your intake of water to flush out your body of all the impurities and eat more spinach and carrots.  Both of these are high in Vitamin A which slows down oil production.

Celeb inexpensive beauty tips

Looking fab can and does cost lots money.  I know I spend a lot of money buying cosmetics, few different shampoos, lotions and what not.  So, here are a few tips from celebs that hopefully will save us some $$$.

  1. To soothe dry, itchy scalp, or dandruff crush few ibuprofen or hard pills and mix with your shampoo.  The jagged edge of the pills will work like a scrub and get rid of the flakes per Oscar Blandi.
  2.  Repair end with Gelatin; dissolve a packet of clear gelatin in hot water and then massage the warm solution through your hair, leave in for 30 minutes and then rinse per Ted Gibson.
  3. Natural grapeseed oil is a great moisturizer according to Emma Stone who uses it day and night to keep her skin looking so beautiful.
  4. Add spoon full of sugar to your body wash and then lather up.  It works as a gentle exfoliater according to Kim Kardashian.
  5. Jennifer Aniston uses quarter of a teaspoon Vaseline under her eyes every night to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
  6. Evan Rachel Wood uses olive oil as her make up remover and you can also use it to remove hair extension glue (if you use extensions) per Jennifer Hudson hairstylist Kiyah Wright.
  7. Mariah Carey mixes mint extract to gloss for a natural way to plump up her lips.  You can also use cinnamon extract.
  8. Fergie uses toothpaste to dry up her breakouts!
  9. Lauren Conrad gives herself ice cube facial to get rid of fat cells, breakouts and for dewy complexion.  She also uses potatoes to get rid of puffy eyes.  Refrigerate few slices, soak in water for few minutes and then place them on your lids for about 15 minutes.  It also helps reduce the look of dark circles (this is my tip).
  10. Scarlett Johansson uses Manuka honey (but I use the natural honey) mask to keep give her face a dewy glow and get rid of all the impurities.

Acne fighting food

Breakouts are always annoying!!  To prevent it, we have to take care of our skin inside and out.  Here are some foods that you can eat to help minimize your acne.

  1. Almonds (Brazil nuts as well) – its rich in antioxidant named selenium which helps protects skin’s elasticity and also reduce inflammation.
  2. Spinach – high in vitamin A, K and iron which prevent breakouts and also protects against future spots!
  3. Green Tea, Cherries or Blueberries – are great source of antioxidants which helps protect skin against free radicals therefore preventing breakouts.
  4. Eggs – rich in vitamin E which protects skin from scarring.
  5. Oranges, Melons, Strawberries and Tomatoes – all are great source of Vitamin C like eggs help protect skin from scarring and also heal irritated skin.
  6. Salmon, Walnuts and Flax Seeds – all great source of omega-3 fatty acid which works to help reduce inflammation from the inside of your skin and also outside.
  7. Oatmeal – magnesium found in oatmeal is known to balance hormone.  Imbalance in hormone is known for breakouts.
  8. Carrots are rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene which helps the body absorb selenium to reduce inflammation or that huge red one on your skin.

I am sure you guys know this already, but please try to avoid eating foods that are oily, have refined sugar, processed or high levels of sodium.  They are known to cause major breakouts and bloating!!

Drinking water also helps reduce the amount breakout because it flushes out all the impurities from your system and it makes your skin glow.  My favorite acne fighting foods are almonds, oranges, blueberries, salmon and spinach.

Last week, we delved into the healthy benefits of Salmon and its Omega-3 goodness. This week, I want to talk about another member of the food fad we see nowadays being touted from the skyscrapers. We all hear that “whole grain does this” and “whole grain does that”, but how much do you have to eat to reap the benefits? The Whole Grains Council (http://www.wholegrainscouncil.org/) suggests eating 3-6 servings of whole grain at 16g of whole grain per serving for everyone 9 years and up. Who’s got the time or appetite to eat 3-6 bowls of Cheerios every day? Variety anyone?

Enter Quinoa. Quinoa is a tiny, ancient Peruvian seed, which has a mild, nutty flavor, is related to leafy green vegetables and is often used like a grain. Quinoa is as versatile as rice but it has a protein content that is superior to that of most grains, because it contains all the essential amino acids. In particular, quinoa is high in lysine, an amino acid important for tissue growth and repair. It’s also a good source of manganese, magnesium, phosphorus and copper, and it has a high iron content. Let’s not forget that quinoa also contains many varieties of Vitamin E, which neutralizes the oxidant effect of free radicals, which are molecules that damage collagen and cause skin dryness, fine lines and wrinkles. Also, quinoa keeps you fuller vs rice because of the fiber content, which means you would eat less quinoa than rice. Less eating = less calories and coupled wit the high protein content, eating quinoa is a surefire combination for losing weight.

There are 3 common colors of quinoa, white, red and black. White quinoa has a mild flavor and is a great substitute for rice, and also great for breakfast. Red quinoa has a little nuttier flavor and is crunchier, which means it can be put in salads without getting all mushy. Black quinoa has an earthy flavor and is as crunchy as red quinoa. You can also get a tricolor mix at some stores, which combines all of these great flavors.

What-To-Do Wednesday: Morning Routine

What are the steps to a fast morning routine?

I always seem to wake up late so my morning routine is super rushed; I stick to my tried and true five minutes skin care routine.  If you are like me, then follow the steps below to make your mornings good and fast ones.

1. Wash face – massage face with cleanser in circular motion.  I use Clarisonic for about a minute.  1:00 (minute marks)

2. Rinse face with cool water and pat dry, takes about 15 seconds.  1:15

3. Apply toner and wait for it to dry and while you wait pat some eye cream on, I would say the whole thing takes about 45 secs.  2:00

4. Apply serum and wait for it to soak in, I give it a minute.  3:00

6. Apply moisturizer on and wait for it to soak in, I give a little more than a minute. 4:30

7.  Apply Sunscreen. It takes 30 secs, make sure it’s at least SPF35, and that’s it for the skin care routine.  5:00
