Saturday Splurge vs. Steal

Face Scrub

Few weeks ago I talked about body scrub so this week I am going to talk about face scrub.  It helps exfoliate all the dead, dry skin on the surface to bring out the bright, beautiful skin underneath.  Below are my recommendation of one splurge and one steal scrub.

Steal – Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub

For $7 you can find this scrub at any drugstore and good for all skin types.  The tube is medium but holds a lot, it lasts a while.  It’s soap free so won’t dry out skin or feel skin pulling after use.  The beads are small and smooth; you feel it working but they won’t scratch or irritate the skin.  Overall a great product at a fantastic price, recessionista recommended!

Splurge – Origins Never A Dull Moment Skin-Brightening Skin Polisher

It costs $27 for  a 4.2 oz tube but you need very small amount and only use three times a weeks, so it’ll last a while.  It’s good on all skin types and it’s also soap free which means no drying or pulling feeling.  The beads are smooth but not as smooth as Aveeno’s, you can definitely feel it but it won’t hurt or scratch the skin.  After a month of use, I got compliments from my friend about how bright and smooth my face looks.   Even with the hefty price, I keep going back to this one cause it’s so good.  Definitely Splurge Approved!!

Saturday Splurge vs. Steal

featured_gallery-saturday

My body has dry skin so I always have to put on moisturizer, no matter how hot and humid the temperature, and must scrub my body at least once a week.  Over the years I have used many different brands and below is my recommendation and opinion.

Splurge:

Photo:fresh.com
Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish

My Opinon:

  • Love the fragrance
  • Sugar beads are soft on skin
  • Sugar beads does melt if you continue to scrub
  • Leaves skin soft but a little greasy
  • I don’t like the oily residue
  • Best of use in the winter season; you can even skip lotion if you want
  • Comes in a big tub so lasts a while
  • Different versions of this polish is not available but you can easily make it at home (see below)
  • Price is ridiculous: $65 for one tub

Final thought:

The price is too much for just a scrub, anyone can make an at home version for themselves for much cheaper

VS.

Steal:

Photo:thebodyshop-usa.com
The Body Shop’s Olive Body Scrub

My Opinion:

  • Fragrance is light but i don’t really like it
  • Crushed walnut shells and olive stones are soft on skin
  • Crushed shells & stones does not melt but is not harsh on skin
  • Leaves skin soft and not greasy
  • Leaves no oily residue but skin does not feel dry
  • Best for use all year long but will need to use oil/lotion in winter after scrubbing
  • Comes in a medium tube but lasts a while
  • Price is good: $19 & they always have coupons or buy one get one sale

Final thought:

It’s a great scrub for the price; it keeps skin flake free and healthy looking and can be used any season.

If you want to do your own version of the sugar scrub, then follow the instructions below. Inexpensive but effective and it makes a great gift.

  • 1 tablespoon honey, optional for dry skin

Directions

Saturday Steal vs. Splurge

featured_gallery_sat

This week’s splurge vs. steal is about the very alluring and forever sexy red lips and its bff the red lipstick!  It’s the one lip color that will always be trendy, universally flattering, since there are various shades of red, and appealing to both men and women.  It’s also the best five minute makeup routine for those busy mornings; all you need is tinted moisturizer, some concealer, curled lashes and red lips and you are done!!  Below are the two that I recommend and also added tips on how to apply it and how to find the right red lipstick for your skin tone.

Steal:

Sonia Kashuk’s Velvety Matte Lip Crayon in Rosey Nude

Claims
My Opinion
  • $7.59 at any Target stores or target.com
  • Creamy texture
  • Easy glide on application
  • Won’t feel dry on the lips
  • Rich pigmented color
  • Extra long wear
  • Contains fig aroma
  • Comes in five other shades
  • Price is amazing
  • it is creamy & easy to apply; no need to buy matching lip liner, can use the crayon to line the lips and then fill in with color
  • the texture is matte but it doesn’t dry my lips
  • color is very pigmented but with light strokes, it will appear light and looks great with lip gloss (if you want a glossy red lip); I would say its orangey red
  • the crayon is a good size so even with daily use, it will last a while
  • color didn’t last long, I had to reapply a couple of times at work
  • the “aroma” is awful, I don’t like the smell at all, its actually smells like chemicals

Final thought:

h

Even if the smell is not good and I had to reapply, it has other good qualities.  It’s a great red lipstick for my collection and an amazing product for the price.

VS.

Splurge:

M.A.C Cosmetics Lipstick in Ruby Woo

Claims
My Opinion
  • $15 at any M.A.C stores of department stores that carries the brand
  • Velvety texture
  • Vivid blue-red color
  • Matte
  • It comes in a lot of different shades and textures (glossy, matte, satin, etc.)
  • price is a little high for the a tube of lipstick, especially since I use it with a $15 lip liner, so spent $30 total
  • color is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I think this lipstick will look good on any skin tone and it’s a true blue-red
  • very, very matte, so it’s hard to apply on dry lips, must use lip primer or on moisturized lips and make sure lips are scrubbed so the color will appear smooth
  • it does dry out my lip a bit
  • it’s hard to use as a liner, even with lip brush the line is not that pronounced; I use it with M.A.C’s Cherry lip liner
  • color lasts long, I only had to reapply after I ate food
  • as I have said before, it’s a very matte lipstick which means it doesn’t transfer on clothes, other people (when you kiss, so it’s husband/boyfriend proof, lol) or teeth, yay!
  • I never tried it with a gloss, but I am sure it will look just as divine glossy as it does matte
  • a tube of this will last long since reapplication is not need that much
  • it does have a light smell, but I don’t hate and it doesn’t bother me

Final thought:

Even though I spent $30 just for this lipstick and liner and it does dry out my lips a little, it’s the best, bright colored red lipstick I found so far that actually looks great on my skin.  I love it and if you have the money for it, then definitely get yourself a tube.

Below is where you can get Sonia Kashuk and M.A.C.  Also I added a great video on how to apply red lipstick and link to a post on how to find your perfect red lips.

Let me know what you guys think about these two.  If you have a great one that you use, please let me know.

Friday Fab Finds

featured_gallery-friday

Today I am very excited to share with you lovely shoeniacs (shoe maniacs) my latest find – a basic black pump.  It’s a necessity in any cosmopolitan ladies wardrobe. Finding a great pair of black shoes for me is like finding the perfect husband (lucky me I found my hubby way before I found the shoes).  Its gotta have all these qualities – good/reasonable price, comfortable, right heel height,  wide width and got to be good looking!!  After years of searching, painful experiences and heartbreak with others,  I recently found one with all the qualities I was looking for.  It’s cheap, easily available, looks great, perfect heel height for work or running errands and the most important trait of all, it’s comfy for my wide feet.  I finally found my perfect fit and happily ever after at none other than H & M!!

These are imitation suede with rubber sole so you won’t slip and slide and comes in six shades.  They are available now at any H & M for only $24.95 in size 5 – 10 (whole sizes only).  The heel is not so high which makes it a great everyday shoe.  Above are some pics; head to your local H & M and pick up a pair or two.  Happy shopping & TGIF!!

Saturday Splurge vs. Steal

featured_gallery-sat

This week’s splurge vs. steal will be about deep conditioner.  I have very fine and frizzy hair which is a victim of breakage and split ends.  Over the years I have tried various deep conditioners from both drugstores and department stores until finally I found one that works and I love!!  So, now my routine is to put coconut oil every time I shampoo and once a week I do deep conditioning resulting in less split ends and frizz; my hair is more manageable and since the split ends are less, I can grow it longer, yay!

Below are my recommendation and opinion on the drugstore brand and department store brand.

Drugstore brand:

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask

  • about $6 and can be purchased at any drugstore
  • the package is fairly big, a lot of product comes in that tub
  • I like the packaging because you can see how much is left and get every last bit out
  • only need to use a little bit so product lasts a while
  • has light and fresh smell, I liked it
  • I used it once a week but instead of leaving for 3 to 5 minutes, I left it on about 15 minutes
  • my hair felt soft and after straightening, it looked very glossy
  • but when I air dried it, my hair look frizzy and was flat
  • after using it for a month and a half, I didn’t notice any change in the amount of split ends I was getting and my hair was still frizzy
  • didn’t notice any dramatic difference in the length of my hair, it grew but very little

Final thoughts:

Although, I liked the packaging as well as fragrance of the conditioner plus my hair did feel soft and looked shiny, I still got the same amount of frizz and split ends along with flatness as I did before I started using this conditioner.  My hair wasn’t more manageable and it didn’t grow that much.  Even though the price is great, it’s not worth the $6.

Department store brand:

Ojon Dry Recovery Intensive Hydrating 2-Minute Hair Mask

  • $29.50 and can be purchased at Sephora or any department stores that carries Ojon
  • the packing is fairly big and a lot of products comes in the tub
  • again, I like the packing because you see how much product is left and use every last bit
  • only need to use little bit so it lasts a while
  • it has a light scent, but I don’t really like it
  • I use it once a week and leave it on for about 15 to 20 minutes
  • my hair feels soft and looks glossy
  • even after I air dried it, my hair had noticeably less frizz but was flat
  • after a month of use, I noticed that my hair is less frizzy and I had very, very few split ends
  • it’s helping my hair grow longer faster

Final thoughts:

Although, I don’t like the way my hair smells and it makes my hair flat plus the price is high, it is helping my hair grow long and soft with less frizz.  My hair looks and feels much healthier so I feel like the $29.50 is worth it because it does what it promises.  It’s a great conditioner, $30 for an at home treatment like this is way better than hundreds and hundreds dollars you will spend going to salon for treatments.

Let me know, in the comments below, what you think about these conditioners if you have used them or any other ones that you think I should try.

Saturday Splurge vs. Steal

It’s all in the eyes, truly! A person’s eyes can tell you more about what they are thinking than their body language or mouth (sometimes smart mouth, ha!). So, I always make sure that I have my eyeliner on (cat eyes of course!!) and gorg gorg lashes! Today’s splurge vs. steal is for all my make up mavens who are obsessed with long, thick and dark lashes and their best friend – MASCARA!

I am comparing steal vs. steal (drugstore brands), then splurge vs. splurge (department store brands) and the final duel will be between the winners of each category and then I will announce one glorious champion. Let the bat-bat-battle of the lashes begin!
